I am probably best known now as “David Britnell’s Mum”! That’s great, I am and he is now my best advert for my teaching skills……. but before my kids I did a lot of competing myself and I have trained hundreds of riders spanning just about every discipline you can think of in the years since I was 13. I still LOVE my job and want to reach out to those who might think I am too busy and those who don’t know me to say……
I am a BHS Accredited Senior Coach in Complete Horsemanship (was BHSII), an accredited PC Specialist Coach & Assessor, a Centre 10 Elite Coach, listed British Dressage Trainer & Judge. Accreditation means I am fully insured, and have undergone First Aid and Safeguarding training and have been DBS checked to work with children. I undergo regular training to ensure that I am up to date with modern coaching practices which allow me to be effective and address issues with an holistic approach.
A private session is around an hour long. It will usually include warm up and cool down and sometimes a few minutes before mounting doing some catching up on progress and goal setting. If the lesson has achieved it’s aim and the rider is pleased with the horse we will often finish early and may use the rest of time discussing theory, competition aims, homework or goals for next time……
Equally, I am happy to work on through an issue or go into greater depth on a topic which may make the session overrun but the horse will likely be in free walk for much of the extra……..
I do not work horses until they are “tired” though the riders may be 😉
Private Lessons: £40 per session plus travel. Group discounts available – message me for more details
I am willing to travel up to 45 mins from my base near Chesham for coaching
Some of my talented clients and their mounts:
My daughter has been coached by Dawn for a couple of years now and during this time her knowledge and riding ability has increased significantly. Dawn is a hugely experienced coach who is able to quickly build rapport and trust with her clients and create an environment in which they feel able to experiment and grow, both on the horse and in unmounted coaching sessions. She is highly skilled at reading both horses and riders and helping them develop a toolbox of skills which they can draw on in a wide variety of situations. Her ability to find simple analogies facilitates quick development of these tools, something which is especially valuable when teaching younger or less experienced riders or those looking to unlock a problem or ingrained habit. This combined with honest and well placed feedback makes for a powerful learning experience on every occasion. My daughter always feels that in a session with Dawn both she and her horse are given as much time and attention that they need and that Dawn genuinely cares about their development and understanding of each other. Sara Ellis
“Having watched many instructors over the years I was immediately struck with how different Dawn’s approach was when taking on a very novice 12 year old rider, albeit with natural ability. The first surprise was lessons spent in the kitchen describing some of the basics of horse anatomy and how a rider influences the horses movement by use of seat and aids. Not everyone’s idea of a riding lesson; but the rider loved them and we both learnt lots. If you want honesty, experience and someone who is prepared to stand back and let you work things out for yourself using the toolkit she has equipped you with then Dawn is absolutely the right instructor for you. My young rider wouldn’t have anyone else and the improvement in her riding and her growing horsemanship is testimony to having been taught by a great instructor.” Kathy Hoffman
“When I first approached Dawn, I threw her more curve balls in the first half hour than anyone should have to contend with. She took everything in, asked loads of questions and has ever since then tailored every session and every piece of advice to mine and my horses’ needs. Even though she’d not coached an endurance rider before, she has been able to make a massive difference to us. I frequently hear her voice when I’m out competing and still, at the end of 80km with that voice going through my head, I am grateful and appreciative for all that she has helped us to achieve. Oh, and I must say, something which is key for me, sense of humour, second to none! ” Rebecca Kinnarney“
“Dawn Britnell … miracle worker, Saint, a dream? Water into wine is a minutes work for Dawn, even Mother Teresa cannot compete! So stop the clocks and hold the phone – the rumours of Dawn Britnell are true and she is as fantastic as the word on the yard says. Provide her with hot water and a single tea bag (no milk thank you) and in exchange you get a complete horse and rider transformation*. Specialising in beach donkey to sleek eventer conversions, Dawn is not one to miss out on. So if you want more confidence, to ride and perform better and to be a better person call Dawn*for goat to eventer transformations, cake may also be required.” Sophie Rothbarth
“Dawn taught me to ride 35 years ago and helped break in our pony of a lifetime Thunder who then went on to teach my children to ride before he died aged 35! She also provided me with my first two ponies Flossie and Timmy! She has since taught both my children along with David Britnell. She will always give you an honest opinion – and has a huge amount of experience! Highly recommend!” Katie Singleton
” You won’t find a better trainer than Dawn – her wealth of knowledge and experience is amazing, Her enthusiasm is inspirational and she also puts the fun back into teaching big time and with her guidance you will realise your goals and dreams. Best of all, her words will stay with you in your head so when you go to a competition you’ll feel like she’s there guiding you every step – I love that! I continue to teach my own pupils in Australia using Dawn’s methods and principles and in turn some of my pupils are now coaching themselves passing on her training methods through me. So just goes to show, with Dawn you really can conquer the world! ” Anita Budgeon
“Utterly brilliant, energetic, dedicated, loyal and adaptable. Dawn is a fantastic coach for ALL disciplines and her teaching sticks in your head so as you trot down the centre line/approach that tricky fence/make that sharp turn her voice pops into your head and instead of hesitating you DO and make it happen! She makes me laugh every session and has been a great support to me and my, attention seeking, giant of a horse for many years as well as training me on a variety of other mounts. Everyone would benefit from training with Dawn!” Louise Austin
“My daughters have had the privilege of being coached by Dawn for the past year.
When we made the decision to trial WOW dressage saddles, Dawn arrived with a clear knowledge as to what would benefit each rider and pony, having already worked with them. Dawn provided an amazing service from the start to finish of the fitting and supplying of the saddles, and continues to do so. She is passionate in all areas of her work and should be very proud of what she enables clients to achieve.” Tracey
“Dawn is an amazing instructor, she keeps her lessons fun and engaging giving masses of praise on the really good bits and advice and guidance on the not so good moments. Fantastic for improving confidence. Highly recommended. ” Laura Bovingdon
